Reaching Higher

Rock climbing was Erik's first outdoor adventure and it remains on of his favorite sports. In 1996, he became the first blind person to climb the Nose of El Capitan in Yosemite. In 2009, he made the first blind ascent of the Naked Edge in Colorado's Eldorado Canyon. 

Erik continues to rock climb whenever he gets the chance. The links on this page will take you some of his recent adventures.

 

Here is a video of Erik climbing with his friend Andy Holzer, who is also blind. This was the first time two blind people had ever climbed together with the help of sighted people.

This video of Erik climbing with his friends Mark Wellman and Hugh Herr on a route called Ancient Arts in the Fisher Towers, near Moab, Utah. Mark was paralyzed from the waist down in an accident and Hugh lost both of his feet to frostbite. A few years later, the threesome teamed up to found No Barriers
