Erik is Climbing Magazine's June Cover Story
The cover story of the June issue of Climbing Magazine is Super Blind, which is just hitting newstands. The lead-in is: "Once there was a teenager who tried to ditch his "dorky" white cane by dropping it down sewer gratings. These days Erik Weihenmayer finds trekking poles work pretty well for getting down Everest - or the Wind Tower, Eldorado Canyon.
He Receives a "Victor" on June 29
The Victor Awards are the longest running sports award show in the history of television. Awards recognize athletes for outstanding achievement and contributions to the world of sports. Past winners sound like the Who's Who of Sports, including Mia Hamm, Oscar de la Hoya, Karl Malone, Carl Lewis, Jeff Gordon, Sammy Sosa, Pete Sampras, Wayne Gretzky, and Tiger Woods. The 2-hour show airs at 9 p.m. on Saturday, June 29. Erik will be among the 2002 winners for his record-breaking climb of Everest last May. Proceeds from the event benefit the Children's Hospital at the City of Hope Medical Center, renowned for its cancer research and treatment.
Elbrus Expedition Begins June 4
On June 4, Erik heads for Chechnya via Moscow for the 2002 Allegra NFB Elbrus Expedition. He hopes to make it his 6th continental summit, then ski from the summit 10,000 feet down a steep slope to base camp. He will be working with Eric Alexander and Luis Benitez, two Everest teammates who will "call" for him on the descent. If this climb is successful, Erik will try to complete the Seven Summits in September, when he'll attempt Carstensz Pyramid, sitting at 16,023 feet high above the tropical rain forest in Papua. Erik would join only 100 climbers worldwide in that elite mountaineering group, and he will be one of the youngest.
