Erik’s Everest Documentary Scores Big in Beverly Hills

Farther Than the Eye Can See, the story of Erik Weihenmayer’s record-setting ascent of Everest in 2001, played to another standing ovation at the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills last Wednesday night. Attendees, mostly producers and deal-makers, writers and editors, cinematographers and photographers, were members and guests of the British Academy of Television and Performing Arts Los Angeles. In the Q & A which followed, many of these film professionals claimed this was the most spectacular high-altitude footage they have seen, not totally surprising since this was the first High Definition camera used on Everest, but still a great compliment to cinematographer Michael Brown. The showing was arranged by Outside TV and Aperture Films, who along with Michael produced the documentary. Farther Than the Eye Can See is playing at prestigious venues around the country. Checkwww.touchthetop.com for a schedule of upcoming events, including November 18 at the National Geographic Theater in Washington DC.

"Supreme Beings" Airs on ESPN on October 23

Supreme Beings, an hour-long feature on four athletes who have overcome significant physical obstacles, will air on ESPN at 2:00 p.m. Eastern on Thursday, October 23, and then again on ESPN-2 at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 29. Erik is one of the featured adventurers, along with Hugh Herr, a climber who lost his legs in a climbing accident years ago on Mt. Washington, and went on to get a PhD in engineering. Hugh developed his own artificial climbing legs with special feet adaptable to different climbing surfaces, and today ranks as one of the great rock climbers once again. Erik and Hugh, with fellow climber Mark Wellman, a parapalegic stemming from a fall during a rock climb, comprised the first fully-disabled team to complete a major climb, Fisher Tower in Moab, Utah several years ago...unassisted! Next July, this same team will undertake another major climb in the Dolomites, in conjunction with a Climbing Expo in Cortina, Italy.
