Farther Than the Eye Can See airs on KBDI

Oct 25th, 2005

Farther Than the Eye Can See, will air on Thursday, October 27 at 9:00 p.m. on KBDI Channel 12, Denver

This is just a quick note to let you know that our Mt. Everest documentary, Farther Than the Eye Can See, will air on Thursday, October 27 at 9:00 p.m. on KBDI Channel 12, Denver. Michael Brown, the director of the film and its cinematographer, and I have agreed to allow KBDI to use the film in a fund drive for public TV. Three times throughout the airing, they come back to Michael and me in the studio for more background and insights on the film. I even get to tease Michael a little and let everyone know that I was the true genius behind the film, especially responsible for all the camera angles and scenic shots. As some of you know, the film almost didn't get made. It sat on the editing floor for a year until it was finally bought by OLN (Outdoor Life Network) and Outside Television (a part of Outside Magazine), who asked Michael Brown to edit it into the beautiful film that it is today. The documentary wasn't released theatrically, but we toured it through the film festival circuit, and it ultimately picked up 17 international film festival awards and two Emmy nominations. We also allowed charitable organizations to screen the film for their own fundraising efforts and, through this process, the film played at New York's Lincoln Center, Beverly Hill's Writers' Guild Theatre, Phoenix' Celebrity Theatre, National Geographic Theater in Washington D.C., and more than fifty other prestigious venues. Farther Than the Eye Can See has raised major money for worthy non-profit organizations which serve disabled and blind people as well as our youth.

Our entire Everest team is thrilled that the legacy of this small film, almost never made, continues to benefit great causes like PBS. In three KBDI airings to date, the documentary has raised about $6000. Michael and his company, Serac Adventure Films, is also producing a deluxe edition DVD of the film, exclusively for the PBS audience, for now, which brings together, as Michael says, "all the fun scenes which we wanted to put in the original film but couldn't." It includes more about the team and lots of Behind the Scenes segments. If you do not live in the Denver area, the documentary and fund drive may go national. So call your local PBS station and request the show. Enjoy it.

Thanks and Climb High,
Erik Weihenmayer
